Dear Colleagues/Friends,

Greetings from AO Spine Indian Subcontinent. I hope you and your family are keeping well and coping with these difficult times. Lock-down and social distancing have become the new normal. This pandemic has changed how we look at our personal and professional lifes. COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on our medical practice and education.

We at AOSIN have tried to emerge strongly from this situation by adopting safe and effective methods of communication and education. Online education has been in the forefront of this battle against COVID-19. I am sure, like always AO Spine will continue to overcome all the challenges and reach you with more member benefits. I request all of you to encourage your colleagues and friends to join AOSIN team. This way we all can sail through this pandemic in unison.

With Corona fear looming over whole world, scheduled AO Spine courses had to postpone for time being, putting a halt to our much sort after teaching programs. AOSIN council took the decision to take the teaching to the delegate’s doorstep. AOSIN became the first council worldwide to organize two hangout sessions of one hour each per week. To maintain high standards and AO principles, the faculty were all FEP trained.

Impact of COVID-19 on Spine Surgery

Everyone is living a nightmare of COVID-19 pandemic. Our social, economical & personal structures are dangerously disrupted due to a submicroscopic particle called SARS-CoV-2. When lives are disrupted, the medical practice can never be the same; not at least till either herd immunity or a vaccine is developed. As spine surgeons, we have experienced an unprecedented change in the way we handle our day to day clinical routine. We are already into the “Locked-down 3.0” and even a shimmering ray of hope is not in sight. The only solution is to learn to live with this contagion for unfathomable future. The nagging question that is giving sleepless nights to entire medical fraternity is what will be the future of medical practice? and being spine surgeons, we are more concerned about how will be the spine practice in coming days.

Education in the time of Covid-19

The current Covid-19 pandemic will probably go down in history as one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our lifetime. Like New York, Mumbai is a city that never sleeps. A virus has managed to ground both cities to a halt. Since the nationwide lockdown, surgeons here in India have cancelled elective surgeries to preserve medical resources as they prepare for an influx of patients. Many of us are manning our stations and helping our patients who need emergency spine care, hoping that a situation like Italy never befalls on our citizens.
